MEN’S WEEKEND PENNANT

Nudgee competes in the Brisbane District Golf Association’s (BDGA) annual Pennant competition.

This competition involves 4 Divisions with 4 Clubs in each Division competing in home and away matches on a promotion / relegation basis each year based on results.

Each team consists of 21 players, being 5 Junior (under 18) players, 5 Masters (over 50) players and 11 Open (all ages) players plus reserves for each group.

Each season we compete for an overall Pennant (the result that affects promotion/ relegation), a Junior Pennant, a Masters Pennant and an Open Pennant.

The individual matches are played ‘off the stick’ (ie no handicaps) in a match play format.

Matches are played in July /August on Sunday mornings starting at 6.30am.

More information regarding the competition history, format and rules can be found at https://www.bdga.org.au/pennants/rules-conditions/

Nudgee has a proud history in performing well in Pennant, having won a significant number of Pennants over the years.

We take the Pennant competition seriously and have a selection process to ensure the best match play players / team focussed players / brand ambassadors are selected to represent our club.

As a guideline, the process is likely to include (specific dates and activities may vary):

  • March – invites emailed to players with either a low handicap (level set each year based on number of players in handicap bands – eg in 2021 it was a handicap of 3 or below) or track record in match play (this includes past Pennant performance but also performances in the Summer Cup match play tournament the Club holds at the start of the year)
  • April – Welcome Challenge event to get the potential squad members together to meet each other socially and compete in a fun setting to build on our team environment
  • April / May – match play trials held at Nudgee
  • May / June – squad selected (21 players plus reserves)
  • June /July – match play practice matches at Clubs in our Division; various training and team building events held with input from the Club’s Professional team
  • July – uniform presentations and first team selected
  • July / August – 6 matches played (3 at home and 3 at away Clubs) and Pennant champions crowned
  • August / September – end of season event to celebrate our team’s achievements

Pennant involves a significant process and commitment across a 5-6 month period. It is an honour to represent the Club and therefore to be part of the squad a player is being asked to commit to the team based approach before accepting their invite at the start of the process.

MEN’S QLD SENIOR TEAMS CHALLENGE (midweek ‘Pennant’)

Nudgee competes in Golf Australia’s annual Qld Senior Teams Challenge.

The competition is open to male members aged 55 or older with handicaps up to 18 (noting that 2 team members must be over 60 each match).

Teams of 8 players compete in home and away matches with the other Club’s in the challenge, with a semi final and final played at the end of the season.

The matches are played mid-week, with each Club selecting the day of the week and tee times involved for matches at their Club.

The team consists of 8 players playing in a match play format:

  • 4 singles matches played ‘off the stick’
  • 2 four-ball team matches played using ¾ handicaps

The competition generally starts in April each year and runs through to July.
